CAC Scores Big During March Madness; Names Field Rep
IRVINE, Calif. -- Not all the dunking during the March College Basketball National Championship Tournament will take place on the hardwood. Instead, much of the dunking taking place this month will be done by fans digging into guacamole as well as other dips, spread,s and dishes, according to the California Avocado Commission (CAC) here.
More than 30 million fresh California avocados, or approximately 15 million pounds, will be consumed by hungry fans gathered to watch their favorite teams compete, according to CAC.
Two-time NCAA Men's basketball national championship tournament participant and four-time NBA champion John Salley will conduct interviews on behalf of the CAC during the tournament finals in Atlanta. Salley will be sharing pointers for incorporating California avocados into game time fare, and his personal “Slam Dunk Guacamole” recipe.
"As with every occasion that brings people together, the college basketball championship tournament and California avocados are a winning combination for fans and for retailers," said Jan DeLyser, CAC’s v.p./marketing. "We’re looking forward to increased consumption during the tournament."
In other news, Wayne Brydon has joined CAC as its new field representative, responsible for crop estimates used to develop sales and marketing strategies for the California avocado industry.
Brydon brings 30 years of agriculture experience to CAC, providing estimates and harvest management to hundreds of avocado growers. He has also successfully led grower responses to major events like freezes, windfalls, and pest quarantines.
In his new position, Brydon will work with growers from San Diego to San Luis Obispo counties, serving as a communication liaison between growers, the commission, and county and state agriculture officials.
