Byerly's Opens Kosher Supermarket

St. LOUIS PARK, Minn. -- Byerly's opened a first kosher supermarket here, the first in the community, to be staffed by rabbis and to follow all the traditional rules of keeping kosher.

"Everything's kosher in our new kosher deli and our new kosher bakery," said Yale Siegel, Byerly's kosher supervisor, quoted in a local press report.

There is a separate kosher butcher room and a kosher oven for kosher breads and pastries in the store.

"Cows, sheep and goats are in, pigs are out," said Rabbi Avrum Kaufman, of Byerly's. "Secondly, the meat has to be slaughtered by a ritual slaughter by a well-trained rabbi."

The Byerly's is also planning on making kosher sushi in the future.
