Bruno’s/Food World Feed 2,000-plus Families

Bruno’s and Food World’s Second Annual Family to Family One-Day Food Drive, presented in collaboration with local partners Fox 6, the Mobile, Ala., Press Register and Clear Channel Mobile on Dec. 16, collected enough nonperishable food items to feed more than 2,800 families of four. The event took place at five participating Bruno’s/Food World locations in Alabama.

TV station Fox 6 was live throughout the day at the three central Alabama stores, pitting the cities against the other in a friendly competition to see which community could contribute the most. In Mobile, Clear Channel Radio and the Register ran radio and newspaper ads the week of the drive to get the word out, as well as providing signage and volunteers.

Money, nonperishable foods and baby formula were donated throughout the day. Most donations came in the form of $5 pre-packaged bags containing enough food to feed a family of four. Many individual donations were of multiple bags.

Donations collected in Mobile went to the Bay Area Food Bank and the Prodisee Pantry, while central Alabama contributions went to the Community Food Bank of Central Alabama, the West Alabama Food Bank and the Etowah County Food Bank. Bruno’s and Food World made additional donations of $15,000 to the Community Food Bank of Central Alabama, along with $7,500 each to the Bay Area Food Bank and Prodisee Pantry.

The effort was part of the Family-to-Family Food Drive at all 57 Southern Family Markets locations. From Nov. 1 through Dec. 24, stores collect nonperishables to stock local food banks. To date, the locations have collected more than 28,000 pre-packaged bags.

Owned and operated by C&S Wholesale Grocers in Keene, N.H., Birmingham, Ala.-based Southern Family Markets is a retail chain comprising all Bruno’s, Food World and Southern Family Markets locations, as well as select Piggly Wiggly stores in Mississippi, Georgia, and north and south Alabama.
