Brookshire Grocery to Buy 17 Winn-Dixie Stores in North Texas
FORT WORTH, Texas - Tyler, Texas-based Brookshire Grocery Co. on Thursday said it will buy 17 Winn-Dixie stores in North Texas, the Associated Press reports.
Terms of the sale were not disclosed. Brookshire, which operates 131 supermarkets in Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas, said it expects to complete the purchase in June.
Brookshire's announcement is the first major purchase of since Winn-Dixie Stores Inc. announced May 6 that it would close all 71 of its stores in Texas and five in Oklahoma.
Brookshire spokesman Sam Anderson said the family-owned company would replace store managers and interview the stores' 1,000 employees for jobs, according to AP.
