Brookshire Grocery Appoints C.E.O.

TYLER, Texas -- Regional operator Brookshire Grocery Co. here has named one of its longtime executives, Marvin S. Massey Jr., c.e.o., after spending several years without a chief.

Massey has been with the company for 21 years, most recently serving as e.v.p. - c.f.o., secretary. As chief executive, he will oversee all areas of the company: retail, distribution, administration, and manufacturing. He will also serve as chairman of the company's executive committee.

Now taking on the c.f.o. role is Tim King, who was most recently e.v.p. - controller.

The company's established operational leadership structure, in which four members of the Brookshire family independently oversee four corporate groups, remains in place, spokesman Sam Anderson told Progressive Grocer. These include Britt Brookshire as president of retail operations, Brad Brookshire as president of corporate development, Mark Brookshire as president of marketing, and Tim Brookshire as president of human resources/financial.

The company had gone without a c.e.o. for several years after its former chief, James Hardin, retired. "We decided it was in the best interest of the company to have a c.e.o.," Anderson said.

Massey, who joined the company in 1984 as assistant treasurer, expressed his enthusiasm for his new role and the company's future. "Our company is financially strong and has a great heritage of being people-oriented. We will continue to focus and fine tune our efforts on the legendary customer service for which we are famous," he said in a statement.

New s.v.p./c.f.o. and controller King has served in the financial area of Brookshire Grocery Co. for 15 years. He will also serve on the company's executive committee.

Brookshire Grocery Co. operates 154 stores under the banners of Brookshire's, Super 1 Foods, and Olé Foods in an expansive market area now covering Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi.
