BJ's Wholesale Club Helps Florida Residents Prepare for Hurricane Season

NATICK, Mass. -- Inspired by the state of Florida's establishment of a tax-free shopping holiday on hurricane supplies, BJ's Wholesale Club here has instituted a program allowing even nonmembers to benefit from its low wholesale prices.

During the statewide tax-free shopping holiday, which runs from June 1 through June 12, BJ's members and nonmembers can buy hurricane supplies at any of the 19 Florida BJ's locations. Nonmembers must visit the Member Services desk at any club to receive a special offer before shopping.

According to the company, BJ's offers every item on Florida's approved tax-free hurricane supply list, which includes batteries, candles, flashlights, coolers, radios, and generators. Additionally, BJ's invites shoppers to stock up on other necessities not featured on the state's list, such as bottled water, nonperishable food items, and personal care items, in accordance with the American Red Cross' advice that each family assemble an emergency preparedness kit containing a three-day supply of water and nonperishable foods, a first-aid kit, nonprescription medication, utility tools, and other supplies.

"We applaud the state's efforts to encourage consumers to plan ahead," said Gina Iacovone, BJ's v.p. of field operations, in a statement. "After witnessing the devastating effects of the hurricanes that hit Florida last year, we hope Florida residents recognize the importance of advance preparation as we head into the 2005 hurricane season."

BJ's Wholesale Club currently operates 157 clubs and 82 gas stations in 16 states.
