BJ'S Recalls Pre-Packaged Fresh Mushrooms, Citing E. Coli Traces

NATICK, Mass. -- BJ's Wholesale Club, Inc. here said it voluntarily yanked pre-packaged fresh mushrooms under its private label Wellsley Farms brand, after tests showed trace amounts of E. coli.

The chain said test results as part of a "routine inspection of produce" showed the possible presence of trace amounts of E. coli from one lot code of Wellsley Farms brand sliced fresh mushrooms, which would have been purchased between February 11 and February 19, 2007.

It said confirmatory testing is ongoing. Although the chain had not yet received any reports of illnesses, as a precautionary measure it removed from sale all potentially affected products.

BJ's said the products removed were:
-- Wellsley Farms fresh Sliced Mushrooms, 20 ounces, SKU 016377
-- Wellsley Farms fresh White Mushrooms, 24 ounces, SKU 016375
-- Wellsley Farms fresh Portabella Caps, 16 ounces, SKU 016573
-- Wellsley Farms fresh Baby Bella Caps, 10 ounces, SKU 016572
-- Wellsley Farms fresh White Mushrooms, 10 ounces, SKU 016376

The Wellsley brand is one of BJ's major private labels, extending across fresh departments including produce, deli, prepared foods, and bakery.

BJ's urged club members who purchased Wellsley Farms brand fresh mushrooms between February 11 and February 19, 2007 to discontinue use of the product and return unused portions to any BJ's Wholesale Club for a refund.

BJ's Wholesale Club operates 172 clubs and 96 gas stations in 16 states.
