BJ's Names Warehouse Club Vet President and C.E.O.
NATICK, Mass. -- As part of a bid to revitalize its business, BJ's Wholesale Club, Inc. here said yesterday that its board has decided to give interim c.e.o. Herb Zarkin the permanent position of president and c.e.o.
Zarkin, who will also remain chairman, has served as interim c.e.o. since November, when Mike Wedge resigned from the company in the wake of disappointing sales results.
The new top exec has been a director of the company since November 1996, and chairman since 1997. From 1993 to 1997 he was president, c.e.o., and director of Waban, Inc., which operated BJ's Wholesale Club and HomeBase, another warehouse merchandising business.
"Over the past few months, we have assembled a talented management team with deep wholesale club experience and a track record of success in the two areas where we want to focus our attention in 2007: merchandising and membership," said Zarkin in a statement, adding that he was "optimistic about BJ's prospects for profitable growth."
BJ's operates 172 BJ's wholesale clubs in 16 states.
