BJ's, Kids Team Up for Make a Difference Day

NATICK, Mass. -- In observation of USA Weekend Magazine's national Make A Difference Day on Saturday, Oct. 22, BJ's Wholesale Club joined forces with children across the eastern United States to aid thousands of people affected by the recent devastating hurricanes that hit the Gulf Region.

On the appointed day, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., each of the retailer's 159 clubs hosted a community service project in which area youngsters prepared 8,000 personalized care packages to be donated to the American Red Cross and Salvation Army for distribution to hurricane victims. Each hand-decorated bag contained personal care items contributed by Unilever.

"With thousands of families displaced after the recent hurricanes, BJ's wanted to focus on a community project that would benefit them in some way," said company president and c.e.o. Michael T. Wedge in a statement.

The event marked BJ's seventh consecutive year of participation in this free-to-the-public community project for Make A Difference Day.

BJ's operates 159 clubs and 83 gas stations in 16 states.
