BJ's and Verizon Recycling Cell Phones at More N.Y. Stores
NATICK, Mass. -- BJ's Wholesale Club, Inc. here and Basking Ridge, N.J.-based Verizon Wireless said yesterday that old wireless phones and accessories will be collected at Verizon Wireless Communications Stores at more BJ's locations throughout New York state, starting this week, expanding a program that is already in place at 33 BJ's clubs in the state..
The Verizon Wireless "HopeLine" phone-recycling program is in line with a New York state law, effective Jan. 1, 2007, requiring wireless phone retailers to accept and recycle old cell phones. To encourage even more participation in its HopeLine program, Verizon Wireless will contribute $5, up to a maximum of $25,000, to area domestic violence shelters and advocacy groups for each wireless phone donated at BJ's locations or any Verizon Wireless Communications Stores in New York in January.
Verizon Wireless spokeswoman Kim Ancin told Progressive Grocer that there were "plans to possibly extend the program," both by means of stores-within-stores in other retailers and standalone Verizon Wireless Communications Stores, although she declined to give specifics.
In other BJ's news, Miami-based Atlantis Business Development Corp., Inc. said that the warehouse club retailer had joined "a growing list of community-focused businesses offering to participate in the EFTAS (Employment for the Armed Services) program, which assists our military men and women as they return home to their communities."
BJ's operates 165 BJ's Wholesale Clubs and two ProFoods Restaurant Supply clubs.
