Big Y Touts Natural Beef, Milk Programs

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Big Y here said it has rolled out new milk and beef programs with a difference. The regional grocer brand said it now offers rBST hormone-free private label milk varieties, and only All Natural USDA Angus Choice Beef in all its stores.

Big Y spokeswoman Kathy DeNardo told Progressive Grocer that the milk was phased in throughout 2007, while the beef came in around the fall of last year.

“We’ve found that our customers continue to seek healthy and affordable choices for their families,” noted Big Y v.p. of sales Phillip J. Schneider in a statement. “Through our Big Y beef and milk programs as well as many others, we are able to offer products that assist them every day. We will continue to work with our manufacturer partners to seek out more and more healthy and organic products for our customers to enjoy.”

All Big Y brand fresh milk, which comes in 2%, 1%, and fat-free varieties, is from dairy cows that haven’t been injected with artificial growth hormone (rBST), which would make them produce more milk, according to the chain.

Big Y’s All Natural Angus Choice beef is guaranteed to be free of antibiotics or added hormones during the 120-day finishing stage. The Midwestern premium Angus cattle are fed a high-quality, 100 percent vegetarian corn-based diet, as well as feed tested for pesticides to ensure quality. The retailer carries 85 cuts of beef, in addition to two all-natural ground beef varieties.

Big Y’s natural and organic products include many varieties of fruits and vegetables; air-chilled chicken; milk and eggs; cereal; baby food; 250 Full Circle Organic items; frozen foods; Fair Trade coffees, teas, and rice; all-natural shampoos and vitamins; and environmentally friendly paper and cleaning products.

Family-owned and –operated Big Y operates 56 stores throughout Connecticut and Massachusetts, with over 9,800 employees.
