Big Y Appoints V.P. of Information Resources and Technology
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Big Y Foods, Inc. here has named Michael A. Tami to the position of v.p. of information resources and technology. Tami will maintain and develop an overall framework that guides knowledge management at all levels of the company.
Among his responsibilities are computer systems and applications development, and store systems implementation and support, as well as computer operations, including networking. Tami will additionally guide the development of a knowledge infrastructure that includes the use of "dashboards" and other tools enabling the effective use of information and communications throughout the retailer.
Reporting to s.v.p., finance and administration Herbert T. Dotterer, Tami succeeds v.p. of information systems John N. Sarno, who recently retired.
Tami's last position was director of information systems at Big Y, which he joined in 1998. Before coming to the company, he gained over 20 years of experience within the food industry, beginning in 1979 at Riverside Markets, a small independent grocer in Pennsylvania, where he eventually rose from a computer operator to manager of applications development. In 1991 he joined Syracuse, N.Y.-based Penn Traffic Co. as director of information technology, in which capacity he was responsible for consolidating computer systems throughout the chain.
Tami is also president of the Retalix International Point-of-Sale Advisory Group and a member of the Food Marketing Institute's IT Share Group.
One of the largest independently owned supermarket chains in New England, family-owned and -operated Big Y operates 56 stores in Connecticut and Massachusetts, with over 9,200 employees.
