Big Y Adds Muscle to Its Real Estate and Facilities Teams

Regional retailer Big Y Foods, Inc. has named Frank J. Horacek v.p. of real estate and development, and Anthony P. Coppola director of facilities management.

In his new role Horacek, who has 38 years of experience in retail real estate management, will manage Big Y's real estate portfolio, both leased and owned, including leasing of company-owned shopping centers and new store development such as acquisitions and construction, and will oversee store maintenance at all 57 Big Y locations. He reports to Big Y president and c.o.o. Charles L. D'Amour.

Horacek joined Big Y in 2004 as director of real estate. Before Big Y, Horacek was the regional director of real estate for A&P's New England Division and v.p. of real estate for Edwards Super Food Stores and Ames Department Stores, among other positions.

He has overseen site selection, market assessment, acquisition, and permitting for new and expanded store locations throughout the northeast, as well as the design and implementation of computerized real estate databases and data management systems.

As director of facilities management, Coppola will handle all facilities management, including maintenance, construction, store design, purchasing, and energy management for all facilities with Big Y including stores, distribution centers, and the store support center campus.

Coppola has over 25 years of facilities management experience in the supermarket industry. He came to Big Y in 1983 as a refrigeration technician, after having worked at a local HVAC/R contracting company, became a field supervisor a few years later, and rose to maintenance manager in 1998 before attaining his last position of director of construction and maintenance in 2004. He reports to Horacek.

Springfield, Mass.-based, family-owned and -operated Big Y operates 57 stores in Connecticut and Massachusetts, with over 9,800 employees.
