Bi-Lo/Bruno's Offering Flu Shots

MAULDIN, S.C. -- More than 140 Bi-Lo pharmacies in four states, in addition to over 40 Bruno's, Food World, and Food Max pharmacies, will begin offering flu shots for shoppers this month.

More people tend to get the flu during the winter, and health officials urge them to be immunized, especially if they are high-risk individuals. Those in the following categories are considered high risk:
--People 65 years and older, with and without chronic health conditions
--Residents of long-term care facilities
--People 2 to 64 years old with chronic health conditions
--Children 6 to 23 months of age
--Pregnant women
--Health-care personnel who provide direct patient care
--Household contacts and out-of-home caregivers of children younger than 6 months of age.

Vaccinations are not yet available to the general public.

"Influenza is usually debilitating and can be life-threatening to some people, especially those with weakened immune systems," said Rick Fiddie, Bruno's director of pharmacy operations, in a statement. "We hope that by offering flu shots in our convenient locations, our customers will take advantage of this opportunity."

Bruno's has teamed with nurses from Maxium HealthCare Services to offer flu vaccinations for $22 with a Bonus Value Card and pneumonia vaccinations for $35. For a complete schedule of immunization dates, customers can call their local Bruno's, Food Max, or Food World pharmacy, or visit the Bruno's Web site or the Food World Web site.

Bi-Lo has joined with nurses from Flu Busters to offer flu vaccinations for $22 with a Bonuscard and pneumonia vaccinations for $25 with a Bonuscard. For a schedule of immunization dates, shoppers can call their local Bi-Lo pharmacy or log on to the Bi-Lo web site at http://www.BI-LO.com.

In other Bi-Lo news, the grocer has presented a check for $1,000,000 to the American Red Cross for disaster relief. The amount is the result of in-store customer donations and contributions from Bi-Lo business partners Western Union and the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala. Additionally, The Bi-Lo Charity Golf Classic provided more than $150,000 of the $1,000,000 contribution.

In the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Bi-Lo launched a two-part disaster relief program. First, the company collected donations from customers and employees for the American Red Cross, using Bi-Lo's in-store scan card program. The grocer offered to match customer donations, up to $25,000, a goal that was achieved on the first day of the program, according to Bi-Lo/Bruno's president and c.e.o. Dean Cohagen. Second, when the city of Greenville, S.C. announced that New Orleans evacuees would be housed at the Palmetto Expo Center, Bi-Lo stores became donation drop-off locations for water, baby items, and other necessary items. Customers contributed more than 250 tons of personal hygiene and household products. All donated items were stored in a Bi-Lo warehouse and given out by the Salvation Army.

"Donations from these two programs greatly exceeded any other donation program at Bi-Lo," noted Cohagen. "This million-dollar contribution is a tribute to the generosity and compassion of Bi-Lo, our customers, and employees."

Bi-Lo/Bruno's operates more than 400 stores in South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, Florida, and Mississippi, employing about 30,000 associates.
