Bi-Lo Makes the Grade With Hispanic Heritage Month Essay Contest

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- To mark National Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, Bi-Lo Supermarkets here is holding an essay contest for high school seniors, on the theme, "What is Your Dream?"

The theme was chosen to express "the goals and aspirations of students in the fastest-growing ethnic group in the country," said Bi-Lo, which notes that it's offering the contest "to help inspire the dreams of future generations of Hispanic leaders and scholars."

Eligible students must write an essay of at least 300 words, and submit it by Oct. 15. On Dec. 1 Bi-Lo will announce one winner from each of its regions. Each winner will get a $1,000 scholarship.

"The contest is open to all high school seniors, not just Hispanics," emphasized Bi-Lo senior director of diversity, Magaly Penn, in a statement. "It is important for everyone to celebrate Hispanic contributions to American history."

Additionally, Bi-Lo's approximately 30,000 associates will observe Hispanic Heritage Month through a special ongoing trivia contest created to educate them about Hispanic culture and life.

High school seniors interested in participating in the essay contest can go to the customer service center at any Bi-Lo location, visit http://www.BI-LO.com, or mail entries to Attn: Diversity Department P.O. Box 99 Mauldin, SC 29662

BI-LO/Bruno's operates more 400 stores in South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, Florida, and Mississippi.
