Bi-Lo Charity Golf Tournament Opens to Public

Mauldin, S.C.-based Bi-Lo is opening its charity golf tournament -- the largest one-day charity golf tournament in the United States -- for public participation for the first time in its 25-year history.

Taking place on more than 10 golf courses throughout the Upstate region of South Carolina and southwestern North Carolina, the event raises funds for hundreds of charitable organizations.

“The funds raised by the Charity Classic provide support for so many important organizations, and it is great to now be able to invite members of the community to join us in this effort,” said Carol Browning, director of Bi-Lo Charities.

Each individual player sponsorship spot costs $850 and includes 18 holes of golf at a first-class course and invitations for the player and a guest to the Charity Classic parties the evenings of Sunday, June 7, and Monday, June 8.

Players and a guest will attend the Pairings Party and Auction at 6 p.m. on Sunday. On Monday, participants will play a round at one of the Charity Classic courses, teeing off at 10 a.m. After their game, they will attend the Awards Banquet that evening at 5:30 p.m. Each player will also have the opportunity to designate a portion of his or her player sponsorship funds to a Bi-Lo Charities charity of his or her choice.

Last year, more than 1,400 golfers from 35 states participated in the Charity Classic, raising more than $5.6 million for deserving organizations.

Each of the parties will be at the Hartness Estate in Greenville, S.C., in an air-conditioned tent that measures more than 50,000 square feet. The parties will feature world-class fare, with a menu based on the 2009 Charity Classic theme.

This year’s courses include some of the nation’s top-ranked golf facilities, including Cliffs at Glassy, the Reserve at Lake Keowee, and Bright’s Creek Golf Club.

The Bi-Lo Charity Classic began in 1983 as a fundraiser for Meals on Wheels and has since grown to be the largest one-day charity golf tournament in the country. During the past 25 years, the tournament has raised more than $44 million to support hundreds of charities throughout Bi-Lo’s four-state operating area of South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee and Georgia. Funds from the Charity Classic go toward supporting organizations that focus on Bi-Lo Charities’ key initiatives, including children, education and hunger relief.
