Bi-Lo Charity Classic Raises More Than $3 Million

MAULDIN, S.C. - The 2003 Bi-Lo Charity Classic, one of the nation's largest one-day benefit golf tournaments, raised more than $3 million, Mauldin, S.C.-based Bi-Lo announced.

This year's 20th anniversary event, which took place June 9 in upstate section South Carolina, included more than 1,060 amateur golfers. Funds raised by the tournament will be donated to charitable organizations in South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee.

Founded in 1984 as a fundraiser for Meals On Wheels of Greenville, Bi-Lo's annual golf tournament places funding emphasis on hunger relief programs, children's charities and education. Meals On Wheels organizations in all four states receive funding from the Charity Classic, helping these groups serve over 13,000 meals to the elderly and disabled every day of the year. In addition to corporate grants, each Bi-Lo supermarket receives $1,000 from tournament proceeds to assist a local non-profit in their community.

Bi-Lo LLC, a division of Ahold, operates 300 supermarkets and 135 Golden Gallon Convenience stores in South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee and employs 27,000. In its 20-year history, the BI-LO Charity Classic has raised more than $19 million for charity.
