BGC’s Benefit Golf Tournament Starts Today

Almost 500 golfers will gather at the Hollytree, Cascades, Eagle’s Bluff and Garden Valley golf clubs today for Brookshire Grocery Co.’s (BGC) Benefit Golf Tournament.

The Tyler, Texas-based grocer’s 22nd annual tournament supports such children’s charities as the Children’s Miracle Network, Children’s Advocacy Centers, CASA, Boys and Girls Clubs, Azleway, Boy Scouts of America. To date, the event has raised $2.4 million for nonprofits, and BGC expects the 2010 tournament’s take to surpass last year’s donation of $280,000.

“Vendors and company leaders play in this tournament, and they always show tremendous support,” noted Sam Anderson, director of consumer and community relations for BGC. “We have representatives from across the country coming to east Texas to participate in the event.”

According to Anderson, all money raised goes to nonprofit children’s services and programs, as summed up in the 2010 event’s punning theme: “Fore The Kids.”

The tournament is a four-person scramble with a shotgun start at 11 a.m. About 120 golfers will play at each of the four golf clubs in the Tyler area.
