Bashas’ Delivers the Doughnuts

In celebration of National Donut Day tomorrow, Bashas’ will deliver dozens of fresh-baked doughnuts to police departments in Phoenix, Scottsdale, Mesa, Chandler and Glendale, Ariz.

Additionally, the grocer will offer deals on its made-from-scratch donuts, and will donate 10 percent of Friday’s doughnut sales to the Salvation Army.

The observance began in 1938 as a fundraiser for the Salvation Army, to honor the Salvation Army volunteers who served the sweet treats to soldiers in France during World War I.

"Doughnuts are one of life's indulgences -- they bring genuine delight to any situation,” noted Major Bill Lum, divisional secretary of business for the Salvation Army. “Doughnuts lifted people's spirits more than 90 years ago, and they continue to do so today. And now more than ever, Americans are seeking small moments of happiness.”

Bashas’ bakery director Paul Chapman adds that there’s no end in sight to doughnuts’ popularity. “We make our donuts fresh every morning, and as such, doughnuts rank among our most in-demand items,” he said. "Doughnuts are a great value, so they've always been popular.”

As a further incentive for local citizens to indulge, Scottsdale city manager John Little will assist behind the bakery counter of his local Bashas’ store tomorrow.

Chandler, Ariz.-based Bashas’ operates Food City, AJ’s Fine Foods, Sportsman’s Fine Wines & Spirits, Eddie’s Country Store, and both Bashas’ and Bashas’ Diné supermarkets. With 12,000 employees and more than 150 grocery stores, the company is the 12th-largest employer in the state.
