Bashas' to Close ‘Handful’ of Stores
Bashas' said yesterday it would close some underperforming stores around Arizona in an effort to control costs in a challenging retail environment.
“With the economy the way that it is, we have to make some extremely difficult decisions,” Kristy Nied, director of communications and public affairs, told Progressive Grocer. “One of the most difficult decisions we’ve made -- and other retailers across the country have also made -- is to close a handful of underperforming stores this year.”
Nied added that in better economic times, Bashas kept stores open that probably should have been closed, to provide jobs and serve its neighborhoods. “As any other prudent business, we will continue to evaluate existing stores, expand our product and service offerings, and open new stores in the future,” she said.
The Chandler, Ariz.-based grocer will reopen a newly remodeled/expanded Bashas’ store May 20 in Scottsdale, Ariz., and a new Bashas’ location this November in Goodyear, Ariz.
While Bashas’ wouldn’t reveal the exact number of stores slated to close, it pledged do what it could for affected employees. “Rest assured that we’re going to do everything we can to preserve jobs of our members who work in the handful of stores that will close, and we’ll make every effort to place members in surrounding store locations,” said Nied.
