Barbie, Elmo Top Children's Wish Lists This Holiday Season

WASHINGTON -- Barbie still ranks as the No. 1 toy for girls, while the hard-to-find TMX Elmo comes in on the top of boys' wish lists, according to the National Retail Federation 2006 Holiday Consumer Intentions and Actions Survey.

Other hot items for girls this year include dolls, especially Bratz and Dora the Explorer. Boys still prefer video game systems, including PlayStation 3; toy cars; trucks; and Legos.

"Retailers can expect to see long lines of shoppers eager to get their hands on this year's hot toys," said NRF President and c.e.o. Tracy Mullin. "For parents, the name of the game is 'Buy it when you see it.' There is no telling how long these hot toys will last on store shelves."

The NRF survey, which was conducted for NRF by consumer market intelligence firm BIGresearch, was designed to gauge consumer behavior and shopping trends related to the winter holidays, and is based on a poll of 8,090 consumers interviewed from Nov. 1 to Nov. 8, 2006.
