Balducci's Finally Says No to Downtown D.C.
BETHESDA, Md. – Much to the dismay of local residents, regional independent Balducci's yesterday has declared it will not move forward with a planned store opening at the Penn Quarter store in downtown Washington D.C.
According to the Washington Post, the retailer had signed a letter of intent last year to open a store in the ground floor of the Jefferson at the Penn Quarter condominium. In January it signed a lease. The store was scheduled to open this summer.
Balducci's changed its mind in April, deciding instead to focus more on its existing businesses, a move that drew efforts from local residents and officials to entice the retailer to reconsider.
In July the retailer decided again to move forward with the project. Then, last week the operator said the deal was dead.
