Auchan to Close US Hypermarkets
HOUSTON - The Auchan Group will close its two remaining U.S. hypermarkets in Houston within the next three months, the Houston Business Journal reports.
The French supermarket chain cited a sharp increase in regional competition over the past two years, which hampered growth potential for the two hypermarkets.
The group said it now plans to pursue and boost growth by concentrating its human and financial resources in what it called high-priority development areas, such as Europe -- including Poland, Hungary and Russia -- and in Asia with China and Taiwan.
Auchan first opened its doors in west Houston in 1988. A second store was added in September 2000.
