Approximately 45 Employees Laid off at Penn Traffic
SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Forty-five employees were laid off at Penn Traffic Co. this week, most of them administrative workers here and in Jamestown, N.Y. and DuBois, Pa., according to a published report.
Penn Traffic spokesman Marc Jampole told the Syracuse Post Standard that the employees were let go as part of the grocer's effort to become more efficient in a highly competitive industry. "Only with a lean operation will we be able to grow our company," he explained. Jampole told Progressive Grocer that most of the affected employees worked at the company's facilities in the three locations cited.
Penn Traffic has two distribution centers in Syracuse, its headquarters, as well as DCs in Jamestown and DuBois. The laid-off employees, both salaried and hourly, will receive severance packages, according to the company.
The layoffs were made "in the best interest of our more than 8,500 employees and our investors," noted Jampole in the Post-Standard.
Penn Traffic, which emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in April, currently operates more than 59 P&C Foods stores in upstate New York, northern Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, and Vermont; over 26 BiLo Foods stores and Riverside Markets in Pennsylvania; and more than 24 Quality Markets in western New York and northwestern Pennsylvania.
