A&P Raises Over $17K to Benefit U.S. Troops in the Middle East

MONTVALE, N.J. -- The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co., Inc. here said it has raised $17,542 as a result of its three-week in-store fundraising campaign to benefit Operation Shoebox New Jersey, an all-volunteer nonprofit organization that collects and ships personal items via care packages to U.S. servicepeople in Middle East.

Shoppers at 268 of the company's A&P, Waldbaum's, and SuperFresh stores bought a total of 1,960 postcards to fund such shipments, A&P said.

"Our Operation Shoebox fundraiser was a huge success, selling close to 2,000 postcards," said Liz Lucadamo, corporate social responsibility at A&P, in a statement.

During the campaign, which ran from Feb. 1 to Feb. 23, customers at the designated stores were able to buy an Operation Shoebox New Jersey postcard from cashiers for $8.95, which is the cost to ship a single care package overseas. The stores that sold the highest number of postcards included the A&P in Mt. Kisco, N.Y.; the Waldbaum's in Baldwin Harbor, N.Y.; and the A&P in South Plainfield, N.J.

Since its founding in 2005, Operation Shoebox New Jersey has packed and shipped over 14,000 care packages to military personnel in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other Middle East locations.

A&P operates 456 stores in eight states and the District of Columbia under the following banners: A&P, Pathmark, Waldbaum's, The Food Emporium, Super Foodmart, SuperFresh, and Food Basics.
