A&P Expected to Convert Stores to Food Basics

MONTVALE, N.J. - A&P is planning to convert most of its supermarkets in the United States to the Food Basics banner, according to published reports.

Christian Haub, chairman and CEO of the Montvale, N.J.-based chain, reportedly told a German supermarket publication that A&P would convert 120 A&P stores to the everyday-low-price, limited-assortment format within the next 18 months in an initial rollout.

A&P operates 13 Food Basics stores in Canada and licenses another 68 to franchisees. The company also operates three Food Basics in New Jersey and New York and recently said it plans to open three more in northern New Jersey.

In October A&P transferred its senior Canadian executive, Brian Piwek, to president and CEO of A&P U.S.
