A&P Completes Supply Chain Initiative With IBM and Retek

ARMONK, N.Y. & MINNEAPOLIS - The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company, Inc. (A&P) has completed its initiative to develop a state-of-the-art supply chain and business process infrastructure with business partners IBM and Retek Inc.

The combined team from A&P, IBM and Retek has upgraded processes and business systems related to the flow of information and products between A&P-operated offices, distribution centers and stores, and between the company and its suppliers.

"We now have in place the critical platform that will enable us to manage our entire grocery business with state-of-the-art category management tools and systems," says John Metzger, s.v.p./chief information officer at A&P. "We are now positioned to leverage our scale, lower operating costs, and enhance store product assortments throughout our U.S. and Canadian operation. With robust data warehousing capacity for category management and other grocery-specific functionality, Retek's merchandising solution significantly enhances the industry's capability. In addition, IBM has played an instrumental role throughout the A&P initiative, providing critical business transformation and integration services, as well as infrastructure technology.
