A&P to Close Area Kohl's Food Stores

MILWAUKEE - The Great Atlantic Pacific & Tea Co. Inc. will permanently close its 23 Milwaukee-area Kohl's Food Stores and local administrative offices in August, The Business Journal of Milwaukee reports.

Montvale, N.J.-based A&P had put the stores up for sale in February as part of an effort to reduce debt and lower operating expenses.

An A&P spokesman said the company is continuing to negotiate with prospective buyers of the stores, but declined to identify possible buyers. He said A&P will exit the Kohl's stores by August regardless of whether the negotiations are concluded.

Kohl's Food operated 31 stores in the Madison and Milwaukee areas. In April, A&P completed the sale of seven stores to The Copps Corp., a subsidiary of Roundy's Inc. of Pewaukee. Six of the stores reopened Copps Food Centers, and one was closed.
