A&P Canada Rolls Out Reusable Bag Design Contest for Kids

A&P Canada is giving children in Ontario the opportunity to flaunt their artistic talents while celebrating Earth Day, via the grocer's A&P Reusable Bag Design Contest.

"Since the introduction of our 'Leave it Greener' program in 2006, more than 2 million reusable bags have been sold in A&P stores," noted Selena Fiacco, A&P Canada's director, communications, in a statement. "In honor of Earth Day 2008, we are redesigning our ever-popular reusable bag to give it a fresh look and challenging kids to think green all at the same time."

The winning design will appear on all A&P Canada reusable bags, starting in September 2008. The winner will additionally receive 5,000 AIR MILES reward miles. The second-place winner will receive four samples of his or her bag design printed on the A&P reusable bag, as well as 1,000 AIR MILES reward miles, and the third-place winner will get one sample of his or her bag design printed on the A&P reusable bag and 500 AIR MILES reward miles.

Aspiring artists up to grade six are eligible to participate in the drawing and coloring contest at A&P, Dominion, Ultra Food & Drug, The Barn, and Loeb stores in Ontario, excluding Thunder Bay, until April 14. The winners will be announced on Earth Day, April 22.

Since Toronto-based A&P Canada launched its Leave it Greener plastic bag-recycling initiative in select stores two years ago, the company has been expanding the program. In fall 2007 A&P Canada added Leave it Greener to its 115 Food Basics stores, and it's expected that 30 million plastic bags will be diverted from landfills annually as a result. Metro, Inc., A&P Canada's parent company, was the first grocery operator in Canada to sell its own reusable bag.

To date, A&P Canada has recycled about 3.57 million pounds of plastic film, the equivalent of 250 million bags, and sold more than 2 million reusable bags across Ontario.

A&P Canada Co., a wholly owned subsidiary of Montreal-based Metro, Inc., operates over 280 grocery stores under the A&P, Dominion, Ultra Food & Drug, The Barn, Loeb and Food Basics banners throughout the province of Ontario.
