AMI Fetes GMA's Molpus

WASHINGTON, D.C. - In honor of his outstanding public service, leadership, and contributions to the U.S. meat industry, the American Meat Institute here presented Manly Molpus, president and c.e.o. of the Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA), with its Richard E. Lyng Award for Public Service.

AMI created the Lyng Award -- named in honor of the late Richard E. Lyng (1918-2003), former AMI president (1973-79) and secretary of agriculture under President Ronald Reagan -- in 1991 to honor leaders who have distinguished themselves throughout their careers as consummate public servants.

"Throughout his entire professional career, Manly Molpus has been an effective and tireless advocate for the meat sector and the food, beverage and consumer products industry," said J. Patrick Boyle, AMI President and c.e.o. "He has been a champion of promoting sound public policy, educating the public about food safety and security, and promoting trade policies and practices that ensure both competitiveness and industry-wide growth."

Molpus, a native of Mississippi, served as an executive at the Kroger Co., then president and c.e.o. of the American Meat Institute from 1980 until 1990, prior to being appointed to his current post at GMA. In 2002, he was appointed to the U.S. Department of State Advisory Committee on International Economic Policy and also formerly served on the USDA/USTR Agriculture Policy Advisory Committee for Trade.

Past recipients of the Lyng award have included U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Ann Veneman, Senators Richard Lugar, Trent Lott, Thad Cochran, and Pat Roberts, as well as Representatives Henry Bonilla, Kika de la Garza and Charles Stenholm.
