Aldi Plans DC, 70 Stores in New England: Report
BATAVIA, Ill. -- Limited-assortment retailer Aldi here, which has so far kept a low profile in New England with a handful of stores, now has plans to construct a 500,000-square-foot distribution center in South Windsor, Conn. to supply a projected 70 stores, 50 in Connecticut, and 20 in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, according to a local press report.
When completed, the DC would provide about 75 jobs.
Bruce Persohn, v.p. of the company's northeastern division, told the Hartford Courant that Aldi anticipates breaking ground on the facility in the spring, and completing construction by fall 2008. He wouldn't comment further on details of the expansion, noting that the company was "in the infant stages of our site selection."

Since entering the U.S. market in 1976, Aldi has opened 700 stores in the Midwest and Northeast.
Industry analysts said they expected Aldi is planning to roll out as many as 200 stores in the United States in the next three years, the newspaper reported.
