Albertsons Strengthens Presence In Salt Lake City, El Paso

BOISE, Idaho - Albertsons acquired two Food4Less stores in Salt Lake City and two Rainbow stores in El Paso, Texas, from Fleming Cos., a move that the company says will boost its position in Utah and Texas.

The Salt Lake City transactions were completed last Friday, and the stores are operating under the Food4Less banner, according to Albertsons, while the El Paso Rainbow stores will be converted to the Albertson's banners today.

Albertsons also acquired a third Food4Less store in Salt Lake City that was closed upon completion of the transaction, terms of which were not disclosed. Most of the former employees at all three former Fleming stores have been offered jobs at Albertsons.

The company said its purchase of the stores in Salt Lake City and in El Paso is part of its strategy to expand its store base and serve more neighborhoods in operating areas where it already has significant market strength and growth potential. This recent transaction increases the company's Utah store count to 48 and its Texas store count to 152.

Albertsons says it is exploring similar warehouse format stores in other markets. In Southern California, Albertsons operates three Super Saver stores, which have a distinctive Hispanic format. The company has said it will be expanding the Latino store concept to other operating areas with large Hispanic populations.
