Albertsons Receives Environmental Award

BOISE, Idaho -- Albertsons, Inc., based here, said yesterday that it has been named this year's winner of the "Promise to the Earth" award from the National Arbor Day Foundation. The company received the award April 30 at the Foundation's annual awards ceremonies and banquet at the Arbor Day Farm's Lied Lodge & Conference Center in Nebraska City, Neb.

Albertsons was recognized for its contribution to the National Arbor Day Foundation's efforts to plant trees across the nation. The grocer sold the foundation’s Gift Trees in its floral department and gift aisles during the Arbor Day 2004 season, with a portion of the proceeds from the sales of the trees helping to support the foundation's tree-planting efforts across the United States.

"We are dedicated to doing our part to help protect the environment in the communities we serve while making it easier for our customers to participate in the conservation process," noted Albertsons director of environmental affairs Barbara Russell in a statement.

On receiving the Promise to the Earth award, Albertsons pledged to donate 10,000 seedlings to the National Arbor Day Foundation’s "Tree Trunk" program, which will provide trees to communities nationwide that have suffered massive tree loss due to natural disasters such as tornadoes, floods, hurricanes, or ice storms. The Albertsons seedlings will be the first donation received by the Tree Trunk fund.

The award comes in the wake of Albertsons' decision to add environmental stewardship to its annual focus areas for charitable giving. The retailer has promised to donate thousands of volunteer hours and this year will contribute an estimated $500,000 to environmental causes across the country.

Albertsons' divisions and subsidiaries operate over 2,500 stores in 37 states across the United States and employ more than 240,000 associates. Its banners include Albertsons, Acme, Shaw's, Jewel-Osco, Sav-on Drugs, Osco Drug, and Star Markets, as well as Super Saver and Bristol Farms, which are operated independently.
