Albertsons Appoints New Director

BOISE, Idaho -- Albertsons, Inc. here said yesterday it named Wayne C. Sales a member of the board of directors this week.

Sales is president and c.e.o. of Canadian Tire Corp., Ltd., an $8.4 billion Toronto-based retailer with 1,100 stores and gas stations and 48,000 associates. The company has operations in retail, financial services, and petroleum.

A retail executive with over 35 years of experience, Sales held senior leadership roles with Kmart Corp. in marketing, merchandising, and operations, before joining Canadian Tire in 1991.

"Wayne's accomplished retail career and keen insight into consumer marketing will be an asset to our company," said Albertsons chairman, c.e.o., and president Larry Johnston. "We expect that his unique perspective will be of tremendous value as we continue the transformation of Albertsons."

Teresa Beck, retired president of American Stores Co. and a member of the nominating/corporate governance committee of the board, added, "The retail expertise Wayne has gained throughout his career will make a significant contribution to our company and its board."

Sales currently serves as a director on the boards of Canadian Tire and Ryerson University's School of Retail Management, also based in Toronto.

Albertsons' divisions and subsidiaries operate about 2,500 stores in 37 states across the United States and employ approximately 240,000 associates. Its banners include Albertsons, Acme, Shaw’s, Jewel-Osco, Sav-on Drugs, Osco Drug, and Star Markets, as well as Super Saver and Bristol Farms, which are operated independently.
