Alaska Summer Salmon Arrives

JUNEAU, Alaska -- The Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute (ASMI) here said that the return of fresh, wild, and always sustainable Alaska salmon would commence next month.

The salmon season is highly anticipated by chefs, retailers, and consumers. The summer salmon season typically runs through early fall, and this season a big return was predicted.

"This is an exciting time of year for Alaska, as we anticipate the first salmon run of the summer," said Ray Riutta, ASMI executive director. "The Alaska Department of Fish and Game is projecting the seventh-strongest run on record this year. This is a real testament to Alaska's successful sustainable fisheries management."

Wild Alaska king and sockeye will be the first wild salmon to arrive in early May, following their instinctive return to the rivers and streams of Alaska. Cohos, ketas, and pinks follow in June.

The anticipation of Alaska's summer salmon season will increase consumer pull at retail, said Riutta, adding that ASMI has all of the materials available to support increased consumer interest and demand, including a complete stock of instructional and eye-catching point-of-sale materials to ensure retailers will benefit from this year's record season.
