Ahold to Appoint former U.S. Ambassador Cynthia Schneider to Supervisory Board

ZAANDAM, The Netherlands, Aug. 27, 2001 (PRIMEZONE) -- Ahold, the international food retail and foodservice company, today announced its intention to appoint Dr. Cynthia P. Schneider, the former U.S. ambassador to The Netherlands, to its Supervisory Board. An Extraordinary Shareholders Meeting will be convened on Sept. 20, 2001, during which stockholders of Royal Ahold will
have the opportunity to approve the nomination.

Mrs. Schneider served as the 61st U.S. ambassador to The Netherlands between August 1998 and June 2001. She developed a wide range of initiatives in public diplomacy, culture, education, biotechnology and internet security. A staunch advocate of U.S.-Dutch relations, Mrs. Schneider did much to further develop the strong links between the two countries, particularly in the food business
sector, but also in the fields of finance, pharmaceuticals and culture. Since 1984, Mrs. Schneider has been an associate professor at Georgetown University in Washington D.C. She teaches art history and has published books and articles on Dutch art of the 17th century, specifically on Rembrandt's landscapes. Last June, Dr. Schneider was awarded the Office of the Secretary of Defense
Exceptional Public Service Order, the highest civilian award given by the U.S. Department of Defense.

Ahold Supervisory Board members are internationally experienced managers with specific expertise in business, financial, cultural, social and economic fields as well as an affinity for customer-focused thinking. The Supervisory Board has a wide-ranging mandate to approve the annual financial accounts and certain other important management decisions.
