Acme Closing Two South Jersey Sites

MALVERN, Pa. -- Acme Markets based here will close two underperforming southern New Jersey supermarkets on Nov. 2, according to local reports.

One of the two stores is located at the intersection of Route 79 and Ryan Road in Marlboro, while the other is situated in the Mount's Corner shopping center at
Route 537 and Wemrock Road in Freehold Township. The Mount's Corner Acme opened in February 2005; the Marlboro Acme on Route 79 has been open for about five years.

Acme spokesman Walt Rubel was quoted in a local report as saying that the stores were not meeting necessary sales to maintain a profit. Acme has offered to sublease the property to other potential supermarket operations, said Rubel, who was unable to comment on what stage the discussions of the possible subleases are in.

Acme, the Philadelphia area's market leading chain and a subsidiary of Minneapolis-based Supervalu, operates 137 combination supermarket locations in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
