Acme Breaks Ground on Latest Flagship Store
Acme Markets broke ground this week on its newest flagship store, in Bryn Mawr, Pa. At more than 37,000 square feet, the site, which is scheduled to open its doors in March 2012, will be more than a third larger than the Lancaster Avenue location it’s replacing.
“For more than 50 years the Bryn Mawr community has given Acme the opportunity to meet the needs of its residents,” said Dan Sanders, the Malvern, Pa.-based grocery chain’s president. “This new store will provide a greater selection and variety to our Bryn Mawr customers, while offering a fresh, new feel to their shopping experience both inside and outside the store.”
As well as carrying new and expanded offerings, the store will feature several exterior upgrades, including more than 35 shade trees and numerous ground level plantings on the grounds, and a parking capacity increase of 20 percent. Warminster, Pa.-based Northwood Construction Co. is the developer of the project.
At the groundbreaking ceremony attended by local officials, Acme associates and community members, Sanders, local TV station 6ABC and Tastykake presented representatives from regional food bank Philabundance with a donation of more than $44,000.
A banner of Minneapolis-based Supervalu, Acme operates 116 stores in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland, and employs more than 14,000 associates. Its services include Sav-on Pharmacies at select locations.
