7-Eleven's Resolves to Sell More Healthy Foods in '07
DALLAS -- With an estimated 60 percent of Americans tipping the scales as overweight, according to the Centers for Disease Control, and scores of people resolving to improve their health this year, 7-Eleven expanded its offering of "better-for-you" foods at its 7,100 stores to include more fruits, vegetables, salads, sugar-free Slurpees, and portion- and calorie-controlled foods.
"While New Year's resolutions typically include some form of diet, most people are looking for more balance in their life," said Cynthia Davis, 7-Eleven, Inc.'s senior vice president of merchandising. "They don't want to be confined to a specific diet, but are looking for a more balanced lifestyle and healthier choices. 7-Eleven offers healthier choices, and you don't have to look very hard to find them."
Other expansions will include additional energy and protein bar offerings, dark chocolates, vitamin-enhanced waters, yogurt and meal replacement shakes. While all the products may not be found in every store, all will carry some of the "better-for-you" options.
7-Eleven said that sales of its fresh fruits and vegetables have done well. Pre-sliced fruits in cups are available, including grapes, pineapple, mango, watermelon, cantaloupe and strawberries. Whole or sliced apples, oranges and bananas also complement the line of fresh fruits. Salads including Chef, Cobb, chicken Caesar and Asian-style chicken also allow consumers to get the recommended amount of vegetable servings, as specified by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the chain said.
Thirsty customers will also see "better-for-you" options at 7-Eleven's coolers, hot beverage bar, fountain and Slurpee machines. Inside the cooler, vitamin enhanced waters from Stacker2 Dieters Water and Life Water, low-fat milk, 100 percent juices, bottled teas and sports drinks are available. At the hot beverage bar, no-calorie tea and coffee are brewed. Fountain options include diet and low-calorie drinks, as well as a Crystal Lite Slurpee drink options for dieting consumers with a sweet tooth.
